Abstract | Discusses the design and content of British in-service teacher education courses for non-native-English-speaking teachers of English from developing countries. Focus is on the methodology appropriate for this group of teachers. It is argued that such courses must emphasize the concept of communicative methodology, but must also address the problems inherent in this methodology for teachers from developing countries. A taxonomy of barriers to innovation in this population is outlined. It includes management problems, perceptions of appropriate teaching and learning strategies, perceptions of culturally appropriate roles for teachers and learners, teacher fears and anxieties, intellectual doubts about theory and policy, limited professional competence, and limited linguistic competence. A model of in-service teacher education methodology is proposed. This model arises from the tension between advances in methodological theory and the constraints operating in the teacher's own situation. (Author/MSE) |
