| Abstract | The four conceptual/academic themes for the Second Annual University of Kentucky Conference on Appalachia were: School-Community Relationships; Economic Development through Education; Politics of Democratic Empowerment; and Politics of Literacy. Other session topics included: Successful Dropout Programs in Appalachia; Innovative Programs and Culturally-Based Learning; Enhancing Professional Training Programs; Role of Regional Colleges and Universities; Politics of School Reform; and Competing Notions of Literacy for the 21st Century. The 30 presentations covered in this proceedings include essays, transcripts of speeches, or revisions of papers delivered at the conference. Fourteen presentations are not represented in the proceedings because of deadlines or format problems. The presentations included in this document, however, cover a range of topics of potential interest to both school practitioners and university researchers. The collection suggests that the important educational issues and problems of Appalachia are complex and call for more thorough analysis than they usually receive. (TES) |
