AbstractIn spring 1987, a survey was conducted of individuals who applied for admission at one of the colleges in the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) and did not subsequently enroll. A sample of 100 applicants was telephoned and the remaining 2,636 applicants received a direct-mail questionnaire. Study findings, based on an overall response rate of 17%, included the following: (1) 26% indicated that financial problems prevented them from enrolling at SDCCD, 15% could not keep their enrollment appointment, and 10% were deterred by long enrollment lines; (2) 76.9% said that they had been treated courteously by admissions staff; (3) 83% felt they had the necessary reading and mathematics skills to enroll in college; (4) 28.3% said that they would not have appreciated a call from the college to provide guidance or answer their questions; (5) 44.7% had applied for college admission for personal enrichment; (6) 48.4% of the respondents were returning students, while 31.2% were first-time students; and (7) 56.6% were employed full-time when they applied. A brief summary of a survey of 45 California community colleges to determine the nature and extent of applicant attrition at other colleges, and the survey instrument are included. (AYC)
