| Abstract | This compilation brings together various conference papers and a working group report on the topic of supported competitive employment for people with deaf-blindness and other profound disabilities. The title paper by Paul Wehman and Janet Hill studies 21 Profoundly/Multiply Handicapped Deaf-Blind Youth, April 7-10, 1986, Washington, DC. The title paper by Wehman and Hill studies 21 severely/profoundly mentally retarded adults working in competitive employment. The study found that the work obtained for the participants caused a multitude of other benefits to occur. However, participants were unable to find full-time employment and were placed primarily in entry-level service positions sometimes considered demeaning. A response by Kevin Lessard, titled "A Look at the Need to Further Organize and Design Services," comments on the programmatic needs of individuals with profound handicaps, the development of transitional services, and the issues of parents' rights and professional accountability. A brief response by Nancy Norman, titled "The Vocational Rehabilitation Perspectives," examines the performance evaluations, employer attitudes, and costs of the competitive employment program reviewed in Wehman and Hill's study. The report of the Working Group on Independent Living/Vocational Issues contains a belief statement and outlines a service delivery approach, issues and considerations, and recommendations. (JDD) |
