| Abstract | Representatives of Canadian business, labor, government, and education met to share insights about the future of education and to formulate options for adopting the public school system to the challenge of the future. The keynote address delivered by Frank Feather, President of Globescope, Inc. and editor of "Canada Tomorrow," challenged Canadians to reinvent their educational system to meet the challenge of rapid social, technological, economic, and political changes. Addresses were delivered by Stuart L. Smith, Arthur Kratzmann, Frank Garritty, and Robert Moore. The speakers expressed the view that publicly supported schools should reflect the values and expectations of the society they serve. The speakers also said that commitments must be made to individualized learning, nurturing personal qualities, and vocational education. A need for lifelong learning and co-operation between the government and the partners of education was emphasized. Workshops were formed around the topics of: (1) the labor market and future skill requirements; (2) directions for lifelong education; (3) the roles of the federal, provincial, and local levels of government; and (4) the relationship between education and the quality of life. Bernard Shapiro synthesized the discussions and offered his comments and critique of the proceedings. Summaries of the speeches are provided in the document. (SM) |
