Abstract | These instructional materials on agricultural diversification and marketing were developed for use by Iowa's vocational and technical agricultural instructors and extension personnel. This document is one of three manuals making up a single package. (The other two are Christmas Tree Production and Marketing and Sod Production and Marketing). The manual includes three instructional units. Unit I discusses the procedures for establishing and implementing an individualized production plan that will enable the development and maintenance of a viable diversified farming operation. Unit II identifies the primary marketing channels for fruit and vegetable crops and explores sales strategies and methods required to establish and maintain successful marketing options. Unit III provides crop-specific postharvest handling and packaging requirements. Each unit provides an instructional plan and related technical information. The instructional plan features objectives, interest approach, a listing of materials needed, and teaching procedures. The technical information section in each unit provides concise information on the topic. Transparency masters and activity sheets are included to facilitate teaching. Suggested use of these materials is included in the instructional plan. A descriptive list of 40 slides that supplement the instructional units is also provided. The second half of this document contains the "Farmers Market Development Manual," which covers the steps involved in establishing and maintaining a farmers market. Sections include interest surveys, site selection and development, funding and budgeting, market rules, state and local regulations, the market manager, promotions and advertising, the grower group, and market management records.
