| Abstract | A demographic profile of the aged Hispanic community, a growing population, is provided. Such socioeconomic data on the Hispanic elderly are needed for developing public policies and programs to meet their growing needs. The following topics are presented: (1) changes in the population; (2) living arrangements; (3) education; (4) employment; (5) income; (6) poverty status; and (7) health. The findings show that most of the Hispanic elderly live in households rather than in nursing homes. One-fourth of them do not receive any form of Social Security benefits. Their poverty rate, although lower than a decade ago, is twice as high as for the White elderly. Also, the feminization of poverty is being experienced in this population. (VM) |
