Abstract | The purpose of this book is to help athletic coaches improve the way they teach sport skills. Section I covers the athletic coach's instructional responsibilities for a single season, and ways of adjusting teaching styles to the learning needs of athletes. Section II offers guidance in presenting sport skills and how to introduce, explain, and demonstrate skills effectively. Section III focuses on how to get athletes to develop and maintain the skills presented by the coach. Practice and the variables that influence the effectiveness of practice in developing and maintaining skills are discussed, as well as how to make complex skills easier for athletes to learn. The use of feedback in developing and maintaining skills and how to analyze athletes' skill performance and using a positive approach to correct their errors are considered. In Section IV, four cognitive processes important in the performance of sport skills are discussed. How imagery and memory are involved in sport skills is described as well as how to help athletes focus their attention, anticipate, and respond quickly. (JD) |
