AbstractThe transfer of theory to practice in education is discussed, with attention to how new knowledge and innovative practices can be communicated to schools. Practices of Ramapo College of New Jersey are described as illustration. The importance of systematic relationships between colleges and schools is addressed. It is suggested that educational institutions be thought of as part of one system in terms of mission and articulation and interchanges among staff. This system should also include libraries, museums, industry associations, and corporate educators. Collaborative efforts between Ramapo College and secondary and higher education institutions are described that promote knowledge transfer. Joint activities that have taken place in support of cooperative programs include: joint discussions of subject matter by high school and college faculty; joint discussions on teaching strategies; joint high school and college activities such as theater productions; and school teachers serving as faculty fellows on campus. Key objectives of knowledge transfer and innovative practice are briefly considered for: the curriculum, learning and student achievement, assessment systems, teaching techniques, and the way that the school and external environment affect learning.
