AbstractThe Eatonton Central School District of central New York State, formed in 1968 by merging the smaller central districts of Batesville and Meridian, is examined from the period prior to reorganization to the present. The study is divided into three major sections. The first discusses the school district and its setting. Enough of the area's history is reported to provide a sense of the circumstances in which the community, which is predominantly agricultural, developed. The second section covers school district governance, beginning with an overview of the administrations and school boards in the two districts prior to reorganization and continuing with an accounting of the reorganization and the challenges to it. The present-day board of education is then discussed. The third major part looks at the educational leadership in the Eatonton Central School District, the faculty, and the educational environment (including the special education and vocational education opportunities programs provided). Emphasis is placed on the present day, but particular attention is given to the chief school officers and the role each has played in the history of the district. Quotes from residents, teachers, school board members, and others are included. (JMM)
