| Abstract | The usefulness of a holistic model designed for Indonesia in explaining the predictive relationship between student background characteristics and college academic achievement was assessed. The model consists of four constructs (cognitive entry behavior, attribution of success and failure, socioeconomic status, and family educational environment) as well as measurable variables for the constructs. The study population consisted of 411 Indonesian students preparing to be technical teachers in five technology areas in two institutes, one that recruits students primarily from rural to suburban settings and the other that recruits from urban to suburban settings. Results of path analysis and covariance structural analysis are presented. The model strongly predicted college academic achievement, accounting for 70% of the variance. It was less efficient in accounting for cognitive entry behavior or attribution of success and failure. The model and empirical evidence showed the importance of cognitive entry behavior, socioeconomic status, family educational environment, and attribution of success and failure.
