Abstract | This curriculum guide provides materials for a competency-based course in cosmetology/hairstyling at the secondary level. The curriculum design uses the curriculum infused model for the teaching of basic skills as part of vocational education and demonstrates the relationship of vocationally related skills to communication, mathematics, and science knowledge. Basic skills matrices are provided that indicate the curriculum in which each skill is studied. A list of course objectives precedes the curriculum. Course materials are divided into units, each of which correlates task, theory, communication skills, mathematics skills, science knowledge, and student outcomes. Units include orientation, hygiene and grooming, visual poise, personality development, professional ethics, bacteriology, sterilization and sanitation, draping, shampooing, scalp and hair care, hair shaping, fingerwaving, care and styling of wigs, hairstyling, permanent waving, hair coloring, hair lightening, chemical hair relaxing, thermal hair straightening, manicuring, theory of massage, facials, facial makeup, hair removal, cells, skin and skin disorders, nails and nail disorders, anatomy, electricity and light therapy, chemistry, salon management, hair and disorders of the hair and scalp, honing and stropping, and shaving.
