AbstractFollowing an outline of the theoretical approach and method of a study of components of sex role development among German children, results which concern ontogenetic changes in sex role stereotypes preferences are presented. In addition, interrelations of different components of sex role development and cognitive variables are analyzed. The selected results are based on cross-sectional data from 323 boys and girls between 4 and 10.5 years of age, and on longitudinal data from 178 boys and girls of the same age range who, over 2 years, had been tested 3 times. Findings indicated that, while a general developmental pattern of sex role stereotyping could be found that was related to cognitive development, sex role preferences emerged primarily as differential variables, which were not closely related to cognitive maturity. Results further indicated that (1) sex role development in children does not simply mirror the sex role differentiation of the social environment, but rather transforms it according to cognitive abilities; (2) the relationship between cognitive development and sex role development changes with age and is complex; and (3) advanced sex role development may exhibit an increase or a decrease in sex typing depending on developmental characteristics and age.
