AbstractIn April 1986, Pinellas Vocational Technical Institute (Florida) began to develop a Career Planning/Readiness Program for Single Parents and Homemakers. The program is designed to provide these persons with school-based, individualized assistance in developing realistic career and training goals and life and employability skills and with counseling support to increase their chances for successful completion of training. Initially, the program focused on providing single parents and homemakers with counseling support and career planning assistance; however, arrangements were later made to meet the needs of participants for temporary support services such as child care, transportation, tuition, tutoring, and books and tools. As of June 30, 1986, 120 single parents and homemakers had received services through the program, and 66 students had enrolled in training. (This number exceeds the original goal of 40 single parents and homemakers.) Two students had completed training and been placed in jobs related to their fields of study. Forty single parents and homemakers received comprehensive career planning services to assist in the development of realistic vocational goals, particularly in nontraditional and high wage/placement careers. Initial evidence indicated that the services provided to single parents and homemakers through the program significantly increased their ability to continue in training. Approximately 83 percent of the single parents and homemakers who enrolled in training have remained and are achieving satisfactory progress. (Author/KC)
