AbstractThe purpose of this national sample survey was to collect data on the evolution of political orientations among high school students and on the intergenerational influences upon that process. Two datasets (one involving the responses of 97 principals and one involving the responses of 317 social studies teachers from those same 97 schools) were developed during the spring of 1965, in conjunction with the "Student-Parent Socialization Study." With these data, the investigator sought to explore the effects of school-related factors on the formation of citizenship perspectives among high school students. The questionnaire administered to the teachers covered the following areas: methods and materials used in courses, job satisfaction, political values and orientations, attitudes toward students, teacher-student relationships, work time devoted to social studies, community political roles of teachers. The questionnaire administered to the principals focused on: political values, attitudes toward students, goals for social studies, the handling of controversial issues in class, feelings about political parties, opinions about selected concerns and issues, confidence in the various levels of government, perceived need for additional courses, reactions to pressure groups involving the school. The teachers dataset records a total of 325 variables per teacher. The principals dataset records a total of 240 variables. The characteristics of the schools involved in the study were added to the teacher dataset. These data are: size and type of school, enrollment percentage of minority groups, types of activities offered by the school, tenure system, religious affiliations of the student body, juvenile offenses of students, dropout percentages. The conclusions of the study were reported in two works by M. Kent Jennings and Harmon Zeigler: (1) "The Politics of Teacher-Administrator Relations" (Education and Social Science, Volume 1, April 1969); (2) "Political Expressivism Among High School Teachers: The Intersection of Community and Occupational Values" (In: Learning about Politics, New York, Random House, 1969).
