Abstract | The concept of school discipline, based on controlling inevitable student misbehavior, has been replaced with "classroom management," which stresses methods of facilitating positive student behavior and achievement. This book attempts to provide teachers, counselors, administrators, and special educators with a comprehensive, practical description of current classroom management research and methodology. The book is divided into four parts. Part I overviews classroom management and its relationship to students' personal, psychological, and academic needs. Part II discusses interpersonal relations and school and home interactions as key factors influencing student behavior and achievement. Part III provides numerous research-supported, practical strategies for improving classroom organization and instruction, including techniques to maximize on-task behavior, create interesting lessons, and motivate students to increase their learning. Part IV offers numerous specific methods for handling classroom and schoolwide discipline problems. (Countless studies and years of practical experience indicate that some students will cause disruptions in even the best learning environments.) Each chapter contains many figures, forms, teacher activities, and a recommended reading list. Included are a map-appendix, a bibliography of 675 references, and author and subject indexes. (MLH) |
