AbstractEvery two seconds somewhere in the world a child dies from a preventable disease. Millions lack access to safe drinking water. Smoking, alcoholism, and drug abuse are on the increase in developing nations. In the United States, experts estimate that one out of every ten people, a majority of them women and children, go to bed hungry, and the poverty rate among children below the age of six has reached twenty-five percent. As individuals with common aspirations and strengths we live in a world that is economically, socially, and politically interdependent. Unlike curricula that focus on health behaviors and issues that are important to daily life in the United States, this module familiarizes high school students with some of the major worldwide health issues, as well as with current efforts to improve the well-being of the world's population, particularly those people who do not have access to the fundamental requirements for healthy living. Instructional methods suggested are: teacher presentation, newspaper review, class discussion, small-group work studies, brainstorming, statistics work, consensus building, and group planning. (BZ)
