| Abstract | Articulation between public and private, for-profit (proprietary) schools can help reduce costs without reducing the number of options available to students. Articulation can assume many forms, including contracts to offer classes for other institutions, combined (dual) enrollments, shared facilities and/or faculty, enrichment programs, 1 + 1 programs, and pretechnology programs. Despite the many benefits of articulation, a number of barriers to articulation remain. These include communication breakdown, lack of enthusiasm, inability to sell the concept at the top level, lack of leadership, faculty reluctance, elitism, and reluctance to change curriculum. Individuals interested in developing an articulation agreement with a for-profit school should identify the need for and benefits of articulating, identify other educational institutions that would benefit from an articulation agreement, assign an individual the responsibility of directing the articulation effort, establish clear communication channels between the institutions involved, determine the college or university degree program into which the private school student can transfer, establish whether the transfer will be granted on a course-by-course basis or on the blanket concept, develop written agreements, begin by selecting one or two program areas, establish a system for certifying student competencies for the articulated courses, and publicize the articulation arrangement.
