AbstractAn international consultation was attended by 40 women workers, educators, and organizers who work directly with women affected by the new "global assembly line" that has developed as a part of the microchip technology industry. The women, who represented 12 countries, shared information and organizing experiences and worked to consolidate an international network and strategy to continue the struggle with the global impact of microtechnology. The meeting began with a five-day exposure to the Philippines followed by four days of formal meetings that included reports on the social, economic, and political context of each country and the situation in the microchip industry. Small group workshops connected workers from different regions who worked for the same corporations and/or on similar issues. A panel discussion on regional and international networking, a group strategy session, and a closing fiesta were also held. The consultation was based on the concept of a global assembly line linking workers around the world that begins in North America, Europe, and Japan; continues in the developing nations; and returns to the developed nations. Special attention was placed on the fact that the microchip industry is creating new and serious health hazards in the work environment, making work increasing more routine, leading to new forms of management control, and creating the prospect of massive unemployment.
