Abstract	Organized by the International Commission on Physics Education (ICPE) and the Physics Education Society of Japan, the conference reported here, the first of its kind held in Asia, was designed to inform teachers of results of prior ICPE conferences as well as to explore desirable directions for physics education, and was attended by nearly 450 participants from 40 countries. This document includes the written versions of the plenary lectures and special lectures, abstracts of the presentations made in both oral and poster formats, summaries of workshop activities, and other information about the conference. The sessions dealt with topics such as: (1) research in physics education and its implementation in the classroom; (2) the impacts of technological developments on classroom teaching; (3) the motivation of students toward the study of physics; (4) learning physics concepts; (5) teaching physics in secondary schools; (6) teaching physics in college and universities; (7) laboratory experiments and demonstrations; and (8) the use of computers. Included is a listing of conference participants. (TW)
