Abstract | This document contains two sets of lessons designed to teach elementary and secondary students about apartheid in South Africa. The goals of the lessons are: (1) to create a greater awareness of recent events related to the practice of apartheid by the South African government; (2) to provide a greater understanding of the effects of apartheid on the people of South Africa; and (3) to discuss the various options open to U.S. foreign policy makers, individuals, governments, and institutions in dealing with South Africa. There are two lessons on the elementary level designed to involve students in exploring the problems created by apartheid. Simulation and role-playing activities are used on the elementary level to enhance the instruction. The secondary level lessons are more detailed and encourage discussion and debate on the problem of apartheid. There are also role-playing and simulation activities for the secondary level. Enrichment activities, a glossary, and a bibliography are provided for both sets. (SM) |
