Abstract | This report presents findings from a study of the extent to which different kinds and amounts of parent involvement have different impacts on parents in general, and more specifically, on parents from different income groups in two schools--one all-balck, low-income; the other racially and economically mixed. Interviews were conducted with 60 parents from each school. Specific criteria were established to ascribe high, medium, and low levels of involvement to all parents in the schools. The survey elicited responses on parents' knowledge of and actual participation in school life, parents' aspirations for themselves and their children, and parents' perception of their role in school decision making. Data were analyzed by school, by level of involvement, and by sub-group. Major findings were that: (1) differential outcome may be ascribed to the amount of involvement only in part; (2) differential effects were also demonstrated between parents who were paid for their involvement and those who were not; and (3) whether the school is racially and economically mixed, or isolated, has little effect on patterns of parental involvement or on the attitudes or behaviors of parents related to their school participation.
