| Abstract | A three-phase investigation studied the nature of extended professional roles (in terms of leadership) among kindergarten through twelfth-grade teachers in Michigan through interviews, a survey of job titles, and a survey of teacher-leaders. Data were collected on professional assignments, work organizational styles, perception of leadership roles, working relationship with peers, educational philosophy, and ways teachers would change their job descriptions and why. Findings show that a large number of teachers are currently engaged in extended professional roles. The teachers have responsibilities cutting across most segments of the school program, including areas of curriculum, staff development, policy, and evaluation. Teacher-leaders indicated that organizational conditions related to their extended role were critical to being effective in their job. They also indicated frustration when confronted with carrying out two major roles. Strong interest was seen in developing a communications network for teacher-leaders for new ideas about carrying out their roles. (CB) |
