AbstractThis book examines in detail the complex, controversial problem of teenage pregnancy in the United States. Compiled by a panel of distinguished experts, it is a comprehensive review of data on such issues as sex education in the schools, contraception, abortion, adoption, prenatal and pediatric care, child support enforcement, and Aid to Families with Dependent Children. It gives an in-depth review of the trends and consequences of teenage sexuality and fertility behavior and delineates areas in which further research is urgently needed. Recommendations are made, motivated by three goals: (1) to prevent pregnancy among teenagers, especially those who are still of school age; (2) to ensure that alternatives to childbearing and parenthood are available to teenagers who become pregnant; and (3) to promote better social, economic, and health outcomes for teenage parents and their children.
