Abstract | Arguing that computers in education are necessary to prepare children to live in a future computerized society, this report examines the issues associated with computers in education in developing countries. The first of three parts provides a brief overview of how and why computers are used in education in developed countries; describes computer-assisted instruction (CAI), teacher-assisted instruction (TAI), and computer-managed instruction (CMI); discusses both technical and pragmatic approaches for teaching computer literacy; describes problems relating to hardware, software, teacher training, and evaluation; and briefly reviews arguments advanced in support of computer use in schools. The second part reviews the implicit factors that exist when computers are introduced and used in education in developing countries, including environmental, educational, and technological problems. The last part discusses problems that are specific to developing countries in the formation of policies and strategies for professional training, the use of computers in schools, selection of hardware and software, teacher training, and research. While the use of computers in education in developing countries is advocated as a means of decreasing the gap in level and quality of education between developing and developed countries, the importance of taking into account the cultural and general background of each country when developing policies is emphasized.
