| Abstract | Experiences of Eastern New Mexico University in conducting a student outcomes study are described. After tracing the background of the study, the following outcome dimensions are described: knowledge outcomes, skills outcomes, attitudes and values, student relationship with the university, and occupational outcomes. The university's Student Impacts and Outcomes Committee proposed that the study begin with the entering fall 1986 freshman class, which was estimated to be about 600 students. The committee also recommended annual surveying of all entering freshman, second semester sophomores and/or first semester juniors, and graduating seniors. Committee recommendations for developing an outcomes study included: top administrative support and campus support is needed before trying to implement the study; the literature on various theories of student development and student outcome dimensions should be reviewed; and various data collection instruments for evaluating outcomes dimensions should be evaluated. Issues concerning data collection and reporting study results are addressed. (SW) |
