AbstractSocialization of the new principal is becoming an increasingly important issue calling for serious attention by practitioners, researchers, and educational policymakers. This paper attempts to contribute additional insight into the ways in which beginning school principals become socialized in their new school settings and the ways in which they are initiated into their roles. Findings are presented from a recently completed study of the major successes and problems encountered by public school principals during the first years on the job--specifically, their frustrations about being unable to do their jobs effectively due to insufficient preparation to achieve success. Major categories of concern requiring support include: problems with role clarification; limitations on technical expertise in dealing with procedural issues and interpersonal relations skills; and socialization in the profession and in individual school systems. A series of recommendations is given for modifying current principal preparation programs and induction strategies so that socialization in the role of the school building administrator may be less traumatic. An appendix relates supporting data, and 31 references are included. (WTH)
