Abstract | Including excerpts from contracts protecting unionized child care workers, this booklet explains basic terminology and facts about unionizing and addresses child care workers' concerns. Section 1 answers commonly asked questions about unions and offers advice about how to answer parents' questions about workers' attempts to organize. Section 2 outlines steps involved in organizing a union, including understanding collective bargaining and the National Labor Relations Act; choosing a union; going through the organizing process, from determining the bargaining unit to negotiating a contract; and selecting items to include in the union contract, such as hours of work and overtime, compensatory time/overtime, planning time, breaks, day care for employees, sick/personal leave, staff/child ratio, supplies, professional growth and development, hiring procedures, lay-offs and recall rights, separation compensation, discipline and discharge, evaluations and personnel files, grievances, staff input in decision making, sexual harassment, and non-discrimination. Unions that represent child care workers are listed along with resources for additional information on unions and workplace problems particularly affecting women and service workers. (RH) |
