AbstractThe Making Canada Productive project, a human resource initiative undertaken by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC), is described in this monograph. An introductory chapter discusses the need for and aim of the project (i.e., to improve work force productivity through training, using creative partnerships between industry, labor, and government employers, and the colleges and institutes of Canada). This chapter also discusses: (1) the role of the former Minister of Education and Immigration in providing project funding; (2) the project activities and reports required by the contract; (3) eight invitational regional workshops held as part of the effort and their results; (4) the use of spotlight awards to honor outstanding partnerships and the criteria for giving the awards; (5) the successful negotiation of a renewed contract; (6) project mission; (7) project success; and (8) results of an ACCC survey designed to ascertain the level of partnership education in Canada at the college/institute level. The bulk of the report consists of case studies selected as examples of partnerships developed with large and small businesses; partnerships involving both public and private sectors; partnerships with high technology companies; methods of coping with technological change; apprenticeship programs; agricultural programs; projects promoting entrepreneurship; and partnerships with a variety of industries.
