| Abstract | The most developed supra-national language-based movement today is la Francophonie, the movement representing all of the populations of the world that speak French. French is an international language and is spoken in many parts of the world, although the exact number of francophones is not known. La Francophonie has a number of major international constituent organizations and has strong support among some populations, particularly in France and Quebec. Despite these factors, the authenticity of the movement is questioned, and criticisms of the movement and of one of its major organizations, the Agency of Cultural and Technical Cooperation, include these: that it is neo-colonialist; that member governments lack a genuine commitment; that French is not the authentic language of many of the populations adhering to it; that French does not possess the intrinsic qualities it is claimed to have; and that "francite," the quality of possessing ethnically or genetically French origins, has greater authenticity. However, these arguments are not supportable, and "francite" as a movement provides more of a threat, in the form of racism, than does la Francophonie. (MSE) |
