AbstractThe prevocational curriculum guide is intended for use with upper-elementary and middle school mildly mentally handicapped children and focuses on three major domains: (1) daily living skills, (2) personal-social skills, and (3) occupational guidance and preparation. Introductory information defines the three domains and outlines the scope and sequence of the curriculum. Objectives are listed for the following goal areas: money skills, shopping, self help skills, communication, decision making, mobility, leisure skills, cooking, reading, community awareness, personal organization, sexual awareness, self-concept, interpersonal relationships, problem solving, awareness of authority figures, awareness of appropriate/inappropriate behaviors, career education, job preparedness, work-study habits, respect, simulated job tasks, job placement, and job safety skills. Specific program objectives are keyed to instructional activities for both upper elementary and middle school levels. Among appendixes are a report on statistics and factors associated with the employment of handicapped youth; a functional vocabulary list, a vocational vocabulary list, cooking terminology, a listing of recommended career education materials, and figures illustrating curriculum models.
