Abstract | As a part of the University of North Carolina Sea Grant Marine Education Manual series, this document is intended to provide elementary grade teachers with activities (or capers) that introduce students to the marine environment. It may also be used with remedial or special education students, and by youth group leaders in such organizations as 4-H or Scouts. The 20 activities were developed to motivate students to learn basic skills in science, math, language arts, social studies, and art. An index indicates the discipline addressed in each chapter. Each activity consists of sections on: (1) the purpose of the activity; (2) key vocabulary used in the activity; (3) materials and equipment needed; (4) teacher background and/or preparation; and (5) procedures for implementing the activity. Some activities also contain spin-off ideas and additional reading opportunities dealing with the subject matter. An animal glossary is included. Appendices contain lists of other marine education materials, and reproducible patterns and gameboards intended for use in some of the activities. (TW) |
