AbstractThis report constitutes a comprehensive investigation into the phenomenon known as upgrading in Toronto secondary schools. It is a follow-up of a preliminary study carried out in 1981-82. Upgrading refers to the process by which students who begin their high school careers taking Basic level courses/programs, eventually are advanced to more difficult General or even Advanced courses/programs. A students' level of study is significant when factors such as community college and police academy entrance requirements are considered; both normally require successful completion of courses at the General level. In the job market, graduates with credits at the General level are apt to have an advantage over those graduating with credits at the Basic level. An analysis is presented of: (1) socio-demographic characteristics of the students; (2) the students' academic history; (3) current academic performance of the students; (4) participation in summer school and subsequent academic adjustments; and (5) student aspirations. Data from interviews and school records are presented on tables with narrative analysis and discussion. (JD)
