AbstractA wide variety of fundraising options is available to public schools. Such traditional school fundraising events as sales of student pictures, bake sales, carnivals, plays, magazine sales, concessions, and fruit sales can raise significant amounts if handled properly. Corporations, foundations, and charitable trusts provide a very small share of the support offered to elementary and secondary education, but developing contacts with such agencies can be beneficial to schools in other ways as well. Partnerships between schools and businesses go beyond the receiving and granting of money and goods to include such programs as "Adopt-A-School," lobbying groups, and teacher recognition programs. Building these partnerships may prove difficult and may require getting past years of mistrust, but can help add real-world relevance to educational activities. Communities can establish their own educational foundations to provide tax incentives to those donating funds that will be turned over to the schools. School districts can raise funds through careful management of unused property. Some districts allow donors to select the gift they will give from a special "wishbook." This report reviews these options, citing fundraising efforts by California schools, and concludes with a summary of the common features and potential drawbacks of fundraising programs. (PGD)
