Abstract | This reader is intended to supplement existing textbooks and instructional materials in both introductory and advanced courses for archivists, records managers, and other information specialists. Although the articles and reports selected for inclusion necessarily reflect various international concepts emerging from administrative traditions and record-keeping practices, they also emphasize the basic principles, practices, and problems that unite all archivists and records managers. The compilation includes a selection of readings in each of 12 major sections: (1) The Role of Archives; (2) Basic Principles; (3) Basic Legal Problems; (4) Professional Training of Archival Personnel; (5) Archives and Records Management; (6) Appraisal and Disposal; (7) Arrangement and Description; (8) Access and Reference Service; (9) Exhibitions, Educational Services, Public Relations; (10) Conservation; (11) Modern Technology and Archives; and (12) International Archival Developments. A list of 49 RAMP (Records and Archives Management Programme) studies and documents is appended. (THC) |
