Abstract | By means of a literature review and teacher survey, the following key questions are addressed: (1) How widespread is the problem of professional burnout among public school teachers? (2) What are the professional characteristics of teachers who suffer from burnout? (3) In what ways do teachers differ in the amount of job-related stress and dissatisfaction they experience? (4) Is the process of burnout modified by teaching climate? What conditions promote burnout? Which reduce it? (5) What are the specific sources of stress and dissatisfaction which are associated with professional burnout among public school teachers? and (6) What are the most frequently cited effects of burnout? Responses to a questionnaire were received from 939 San Diego teachers. The survey instrument consisted of 66 items divided into five sections: (1) demographics; (2) teaching climate; (3) areas of stress or dissatisfaction commonly experienced by teachers on their jobs; (4) psychological effects--the level of burnout which the teacher experiences; and (5) physical effects. Responses are presented in tabular format with accompanying narrative analysis. Suggestions are made for future research. A copy of the survey questionnaire is appended. (JD) |
