Abstract	This document contains hearings on the oversight of the Census Bureau. The Hon. Robert Garcia (chairman of the subcommittee) presided. The statement of the Hon. Robert T. Matsui, a Representative in Congress from the State of California, indicated a concern regarding what definition should be used to reflect accurately the extent of poverty in America today. The Hon. James V. Hansen, a Representative in Congress from the state of Utah, offered, in his statement, a history of the definition of poverty. The statement of John G. Keane, Director, Bureau of the Census, covered past year activity highlights, preparation for the 1990 census, and remarks on efforts to value noncash benefits. His written testimony discusses automation, economic statistics, and confidentiality. The statement of William J. Anderson, Director, General Government Division, General Accounting Office, focused on the Census Bureau's preparation for the 1990 decennial census and the evalution of noncash benefits in measurement of income. Responses to follow-up questions are also included. (PN)
