AbstractIn preparing this paper, which was designed to serve as a basis for discussion at the fifth session of the Ad Hoc Committee on Education and Training Policy and Programme, a consultant surveyed and analyzed the activities carried out since the committee's fourth session in 1980 as well as those to be carried out during the remainder of the 1981-83 budgetary period, considered future needs, and proposed activities to be implemented in 1984-1985. The paper begins with a general review of the main principles and objectives established for the program at the previous session and then analyzes the activities financed in 1981 and 1982 in relation to objectives assigned for that period. Points from this analysis are then reviewed in relation to future objectives of the committee and the Intergovernmental Council. Among the possibilities suggested for discussion and potential future action are: greater program concentration, either geographically or in terms of actitivies; successful concentration of resources to achieve greater impact; carefully planned linkage of specific international, regional, and national activities; the inclusion of libraries and archives in the program, and possible areas in which common instruction of members of different branches of the information profession are desirable; important audiences to reach; and possible ways of lending assistance in the local production of materials. An appendix outlines activities financed during 1981 and 1982. (THC)
