AbstractUses of discipline and program cost data by Indiana private colleges and universities are discussed, and cost data are presented. Attention is directed to the immediate and longer range uses of the data, the applicability of the methods to smaller institutions, reliability of the data, and the future of this analysis. The findings were used for comparative purposes to provide each institution a historical benchmark for planning and making projections. To determine the cost of producing a credit hour and a program major, an Induced Course Load Matrix (ICLM) was developed. The ICLM also reveals how enrollments in one field affect many departments, providing the average number of credit hours taken by students in various majors. The need to replace faculty members can be assessed using: a productivity ratio (a function of faculty class load and class size), projected student demand data, and the Resource Requirements Prediction Model cost data. The statistical tables cover five areas: direct cost per study credit hour by discipline, full cost per credit hour by discipline, productivity ratio, direct cost per student major by program, and full cost per student major by program. The calculation of each of these five types of data is also outlined. A glossary is included. (SW)
