Abstract | This guide is designed for use in providing English-as-a-second-language training to adults. The first part of the package describes the development of these materials during a project to provide training in conversational English to refugees and migrants. Outlined next are procedures and activities for assessing student needs, taping student conversations, analyzing the taped conversations, preparing learning exercises, and evaluating student performance. The third part of the volume consists of three exercise packets, each of which includes the script of the tape of an unrehearsed everyday conversation. The first packet includes the script of a conversation taking place in a market and covers procedures for listening for responses, contractions, spelling, dictation, pronunciation, inflection, listening comprehension, intensifiers, sociolinguistics, and nonverbal communication. The school nurse is the topic of the script included in the second packet, which also contains materials dealing with pronunciation, listening comprehension, polite expression, intonation, dictionary skills, techniques of listening for time markers, unwritten expressions, and rhyming words. The final packet contains the script of a conversation on head lice and addresses listening for specific information and the main idea, giving and listening for directions, developing rhythm in language, practicing pronunciation, and vowels and digraphs.
