| Abstract | Describing Wisconsin's Project CONNECT, this handbook provides information enabling communities to start and operate a volunteer-based, prevention-oriented program of support services for teenage parents. Chapters 1 and 2 provide brief overviews of problems associated with adolescent parenthood from national and community perspectives. Chapter 3 summarizes the 5-year history of Project CONNECT, indicating its origin in the Family Enhancement Program in Dane County, Wisconsin. Chapter 4 provides materials to aid volunteers in exploring their motivations and values. Chapter 5 contrasts medical and prevention models of intervention and lists beliefs, values, and goals of the Family Enhancement Program, with particular attention being given to family wellness and health enhancement. Chapter 6 delineates ways of using volunteers to provide services to teenage parents. Chapter 7 describes in detail a 10-step model of project development. Chapter 8 briefly discusses the staffing and funding of the project, while chapter 9 provides basic information about program evaluation. Materials related to the project are appended. Appendix I includes a brochure, screening exercises, a volunteer training outline, a volunteer survey instrument, volunteer reporting forms, guidelines for childbirth coaches, a program evaluation form and data, and sample letters. Appendix II provides guidelines for conducting a facilitated meeting and a sample agenda, a list of assumptions concerning the process by which individuals change, a teen sexual activity fact sheet, and data concerning live births in Wisconsin in 1981. In conclusion, prevention and volunteer program resources for adolescent parents are listed. (RH) |
