Abstract | The purpose of this study was to: (1) investigate some of the causes of lack of discipline in secondary schools in the Congo Republic according to teachers, students, and parents; (2) look into the effects that discipline problems have on the students' performances and their development as responsible citizens and (3) suggest or recommend measures that should be taken to minimize incidence of indiscipline within the educational system of the Congo. The historical background of education in the Congo is traced through the colonial and post-independence periods, and some of the anthropological reasons for relaxation of discipline in the schools are explored. Following a discussion on the purpose of the study, data collection and analysis techniques are described. A discussion is presented of the causes and consequences of indiscipline and its impact on the Congolese society. Some recommendations are set forth for improving the situation of indiscipline in the secondary schools. (JD) |
