AbstractDesigned to be used by secondary school students, this booklet makes use of Rochester (New York) related materials to teach about the popular taste of middle-class Americans living in the northeastern region of the United States in the latter part of the 19th century during the period known as the "gilded age." This was the period when the impact of the Industrial Revolution became most evident in the economy, resulting in a higher standard of living, and increases in leisure time and in the sale and distribution of goods. Separate sections are devoted to 19th century architecture, shopping in the "gilded age," recreation, concern for the environment, a letter written by Susan B. Anthony, working conditions, and social events. Each primary source is accompanied by questions to guide the student's study. In addition to providing supplemental activities, this booklet can serve as a model for which teachers can develop or pattern additional experiences using primary and secondary local history sources.
