Abstract | Parents' plans for sending pre-college age children to college, and their plans for financing that education were studied. Specific concerns included: how many children parents foresee attending college; the type of institution (private versus public) they would prefer their children attend; how well preference for a type of college matches expectations; how parents expect their children's college education to be financed and their savings programs; and attitudes toward various possible savings and tax incentive plans among both parents and the public at large. A nationwide cross-section of 2,000 men and women, 18 years old and older, was interviewed individually in two waves: October and November 1983 and in December 1983. This resulted (in the October/November wave) in interviews with 551 parents who had college-bound children. The questions on college plans and financing were included as proprietary tack-on questions in two "Roper Report" studies (public opinion research). The two questionnaires are included, along with summaries of the study findings. Information on the sampling methodology is included. (SW) |
