Abstract | The City of Chicago's curriculum guide for public school Spanish native language instruction in grades 7, 8, and 9 has two sections, one in English and a corresponding one in Spanish. The program is primarily, though not exclusively, oriented toward the large Mexican immigrant community in the city with varied academic skills and experience with the American educational system. The guide consists of: (1) an introductory section discussing the populations to be served and culturally-related characteristics that teachers may encounter in the various populations; (2) a statement of six general program purposes concerning student confidence, appreciation of bilingualism, cultural pride, expressive language skills, reading skills, and appreciation of the Spanish language literary heritage; (3) broad learning objectives for grades 7, 8, and 9, to be refined in the classroom; (4) a sample student evaluation record; (5) a sample student placement test, and (6) sample instructional packets. The last two items appear only in the Spanish section. (MSE) |
