Abstract | A survey of 539 graduates of Iowa State University Agricultural Education Department from mid-1964 through 1981 was conducted. The graduates were grouped according to their experiences related to the teaching of vocational agriculture: those who decided not to teach, those who taught vocational agriculture and subsequently left the teaching profession, and those who persisted as vocational agriculture teachers. Questionnaires were administered to determine graduates' high school experiences, home background, employment experiences, reasons for not entering or for leaving the vocational agriculture teaching profession, reasons for staying in this field, the value of the student teaching experience as preparation for teaching, and skill areas that are relevant to educational training. Findings include the following: 61.4 percent had entered vocational agricultural teaching directly after graduation; a total of 69.8 percent had taught vocational agriculture at some point after graduation; in 1982 only 18.6 percent were teaching vocational agriculture; farming was the present occupation of about 25 percent of the graduates, followed by vocational agriculture teaching, agricultural sales, banking, and agribusiness management.
