| Abstract | Doctoral degrees in science education have been established in several European countries during the past years. This study attempts to survey this development in nine European countries (Austria, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, German Democratic Republic, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom) and in the United States. The first part discusses the institutional situation of science education and the general requirements for doctoral candidates. This is followed by an analysis of dissertation titles obtained from surveys of bibliographic catalogues of the nine countries. These titles are classified by seven types of research and 15 subject areas, including general curriculum, aims/objectives, implication of science discipline, curriculum studies, educational systems, didactic approaches, social implications, teaching methods, experiments, teaching-learning processes, media, effects of science education, history, and special learner. Titles of U.S. dissertations are analyzed according to categories of entry conditions, interactions, and results of instruction. The second part is a bibliography of dissertation titles arranged by country within these categories: biology education, chemistry education, physics education, general science education, technical education, and educational sciences. A separate listing of selected titles of U.S. dissertations for 1970, 1975, and 1980 is included. (JN) |
