| Abstract | A study was conducted at the Lady Gowrie Child Centre in Adelaide, Australia, to examine the role and function of parent assistants and to investigate the effects of the 1979 parent/teacher cooperative for children under 3 years of age on the parents, the teacher, and the children. Preliminary data were gathered by questionnaires sent to parents and naturalistic observation was used during the study; however, this report is concerned solely with the analysis of parental and teacher opinion as expressed in personal interviews. Results are presented for eight parent assistants, eight unrostered parents, and the teacher. Also included are data from an overall program evaluation by parents and the teacher. Findings concerning benefits and difficulties perceived by parents, the teacher's opinions, and advantages and disadvantages of the program for children are discussed. Also explored is the effect of assistants' presence on children's behavior. Practical implications of the findings for parents, teachers, and children are pointed out. Appended materials include questionnaires and statistics on parents and children in the cooperative. (RH) |
