Abstract | Compiled from the experiences of the staff of the Critical TV (Television) Viewing Skills Project for High School, this booklet presents ideas for designing and leading critical television viewing workshops as part of high school teacher inservice training sessions or training programs for other youth-serving adults. Sections discuss: (1) a rationale for teaching about television; (2) workshop planning, including audience identification, definition of workshop goals, location of a meeting place, development of an agenda, preparation of workshop handouts and audiovisual materials, and organization of workshop publicity; and (3) suggested workshop activities, including warm-up activities and activities for English, social studies, and video production teachers, instructional television (ITV) specialists, and community leaders. A chart listing student activity ideas from a high school textbook is also provided. Appendices present sample news releases and flyers about critical television viewing workshops; layouts for suggested slides, overhead projector transparencies, and flip charts; and a list of critical television viewing trainers throughout the United States.
