| Abstract | As part of a multiphase evaluation of Job Corps vocational training in fiscal year 1982, the cost of Job Corps operations was analyzed. Because Job Corps is a social program that encompasses more than just vocational training, its costs exceed those of most other vocational education programs. The total Job Corps costs for operating 106 centers across the nation in fiscal year 1982 were $383,316,876. Only 13 percent of this total was for vocational training expenses. The average cost per job placement was $3,076, with costs for heavy equipment operators amounting to $8,585 per placement and costs for landscapers the least expensive at $1,080 per job placement. Costs per job placement were 44 percent less for predominantly female occupations. Attempts to compute the relative effectiveness of Job Corps vocational training by occupational grouping indicated that individuals who received training in heavy equipment operation, cement masonry, and electrical occupations showed the largest income gains after participation in Job Corps programs.
